Bio
Michael Hait, CG(sm), is available for both in-person lectures and online webinars. Michael is a professional genealogist, specializing in Maryland research, African-American genealogy, and Civil War records. He currently serves as Vice-President of the National Capital Area chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists. Michael is the creator of The Family History Research Toolkit CD-ROM, published by Genealogical Publishing Co. in 2008. He is the instructor of the "African American Ancestors" course for the National Institute of Genealogical Studies, and the coordinator of the resource library for the Lowcountry Africana project. Michael actively writes and lectures on genealogical research topics. He has also self-published 7 books, in 2010 and 2011.

I liked the content and the ranger of documentation you showed in your example showed me already I am in need of being a bit more aggressive in my records search. I was lucky enough to get into both of your Webinars, Exhaustive Search and the Civil War. I enjoyed them both very much, very informative. As I am no where close to exhausting my searches, I don't have to worry about that one, but was very educational to know that so much is available, you just need to look.
The Civil War webinar was my first webinar on Military data. I really need to learn alot more about Military papers, especially the pension records. They have always scared me but you really gave me courage to get going on searches for military records.

I learned a lot. Take your time and make sure you have all the evidence you can get! Also I loved all the examples you used.

Very good examples that pointed up the variety of sources that can be used, as well as the important caveat about paying attention to those questions that remain even if evidence points to one answer. It would have been very easy, in the case of Henry Hait, to believe you had 'enough' evidence. Showing us that a lot of it was indirect and that even the direct evidence wasn't necessarily reliable, was good pedagogy. The way you approached the topic was engaging and drew us into your search.

I attended the "What is a Reasonably Exhaustive Search" webinar today and it was wonderful! I loved the case study that he included - it made it easy to see how the steps can be applied.

Today has been such an Educational experience. I learned so much as this was a field I did not know alot about. It has motivated me to revisit some of my Ancestors I know fought in the Civil War and see what other records I might find. Thank you.

Michael is an up-and-coming genealogical speaker who knows his stuff. His case studies are engaging and make their point. His visuals are pleasant to watch while he speaks. In a webinar those two elements are very important since the person is not visible. As webinars become more popular, Michael's demand is sure to rise.

Michael spoke to a joint meeting between the HCGS and the Jersey City Chapter of AAHGS. He drove from Maryland to Hudson County, NJ, across from New York City. He was eloquent, well prepared, extremely knowledgable on African-American research,well versed and able to answer every question thrown at him. From the feedback and comments of attendees that day, his presentation was, and still is, one of the best we have had.
