Ian Lurie
Marketing, social media and business

Ian is an entertaining speaker who provided a substantive presentation on writing for the web for lawyers at Foster Pepper. Given his law degree, he was able to speak their language and worked closely with the marketing director to specialize his presentation according to the firm's needs. He also took time in advance to review the attorneys' activities on the web to point out room for improvement. Evaluations came back unanimously positive.

Ian Lurie is CEO and founder of Portent, an internet marketing company he started in 1995. His firm provides search engine optimization (SEO), pay per click (PPC), social media and general strategic services to a wide range of small, medium and large businesses.
Ian believes strongly that great marketing, online and off, relies on clarity and helps customers make good decisions about products, services and people. Several years ago he wrote the book Conversation Marketing to be a common-sense guide to internet marketing. He's a student of old-style marketing principles adapted and applied to the online world.
But he's no luddite. Ian is one of the world's top experts on SEO, web technology and digital marketing. He co-published the Web Marketing for Dummies All In One Desk Reference. In it, he wrote the sections on SEO, blogging, social media and web analytics (400 pages - not that he was counting).
Ian rants and raves, with a little teaching mixed in, on his blog, Conversation Marketing - www.portent.com/blog.
His random educational background includes a B.A. in History from UC San Diego and a degree in Law from UCLA. Along the way, he's been an amateur competitive cyclist, a bike messenger, a roof consultant, a technical writer and an Adobe FrameMaker consultant. You may find him teaching his kids to play D&D on the weekends, or dragging his tongue on the ground as he pedals his way up Seattle's ridiculously steep hills.
In his spare time, he attends and speaks at various marketing conferences, including Ad::Tech, SMX West, MozCon, Pubcon and Blogworld. He brings humor, deep insight and actionable advice to every event.

He was lively and funny - he was one of the last speakers, but one of the most energetic and entertaining. Learned tons of things - sorry I had to take a call and miss part of it.

Ian made internet marketing simple, fun and educational. He connects really well with his audience and helps them understand the more complex side of the business with wry humor and plain language. I left his presentation having learned something new and enjoyed it!

When I first heard Ian speak about Internet Marketing I thought of Martin Luther nailing The Ninety-five Theses to the Wittenberg church door in 1517, an event that helped launch the Protestant Reformation.
I don't make the comparison to suggest notions of sectarian strife. Or marketing strife for that matter. The point is that Internet Marketing is like any other institution, secular or non-secular. To remain useful and valuable, it needs to be continuously reformed. And very few marketers have both the willingness AND the *credibility* to challenge the Internet Marketing status quo. Ian has both. And he uses his talents to educate audiences on how they can achieve great marketing results without losing a their souls in the process.

He reminds me of George Will of internet marketing, not for his political views, rather because he is able to articulate complex and sometimes technical ideas into easy to understand concepts for the masses. Let's face it internet marketing is still the wild west out there. His style is witty and he delivers his ideas in a refreshingly straightforward manner.

Ian has true competence and deep experience in search marketing, social media, and online marketing strategy. He is a pleasure to listen to, because he brings real knowledge and experience and explains it in funny, insightful and productive ways. Also, he makes D&D jokes and is a total nerd (+1).
Many conferences in many parts of the country.
